More Florida families than ever are making the move from homeschooling to a structured private online school — and for good reason. Private virtual academies offer the flexibility of home-based learning combined with certified teachers, structured curriculum, and official academic records. But the transition comes with paperwork, and getting it wrong can create legal headaches.
This guide walks you through exactly what Florida law requires so you can make the switch confidently and correctly.
Step 1: Formally Withdraw from Your Homeschool Program
If you are currently registered as a homeschooler with your county school district, you must formally end that status before enrolling in a private school. Here's how:
Submit a written notice to your county school district's homeschool office stating that you are discontinuing your home education program. There is no required form — a simple letter with your child's name, date of birth, and the effective date of termination is sufficient.
Keep a copy of this letter for your records. Some districts will send a confirmation — request one if they don't provide it automatically.
Important: Do not simply stop filing your annual evaluation without formally withdrawing. This can trigger a truancy flag with your district.
Step 2: Gather Your Child's Academic Records
Before enrolling in a private online school, collect the following documents:
Your child's birth certificate
Immunization records (Florida Certificate of Immunization, Form 680) — or a signed religious exemption if applicable
Any previous academic records, transcripts, or report cards
Standardized test results if available
IEP or 504 documentation if your child receives special services
Not every private school will require all of these upfront, but having them ready speeds up the enrollment process significantly.
Step 3: Verify the Private School Is Properly Registered with FLDOE
This is the step most families skip — and it's one of the most important.
In Florida, private schools are required to register annually with the Florida Department of Education through the Florida Private School Survey. A legitimate private school will appear in the FLDOE private school database.
Before you enroll your child anywhere, go to the FLDOE website and search for the school by name to confirm it is registered. This protects you legally and ensures your child's enrollment counts as valid under Florida compulsory attendance law.
At iTutorExpress, we are a properly registered Florida private school — your enrollment with us satisfies Florida's compulsory attendance requirement fully and legally.
Step 4: Complete Enrollment with the Private Online School
Each private school has its own enrollment process, but generally you can expect to:
Complete an enrollment application for each child
Submit required documents (birth certificate, immunization records)
Review and sign an enrollment agreement
Receive login credentials or orientation materials
Once enrolled, the school becomes your child's official educational institution. You are no longer responsible for maintaining a homeschool portfolio or filing annual evaluations with your county.
Step 5: Notify Your County — But Only If Required
Here's where families often get confused. Once you've formally withdrawn from your homeschool program and enrolled in a registered private school, you do not need to notify your county school district again. Private school enrollment is separate from the public school system and does not require district approval or oversight.
However, if your child was previously enrolled in the public school system (not homeschooled), you will need to formally withdraw them from their public school before their first day at the private school.
What About ESA Funding?
If you are using Florida's Family Empowerment Scholarship for Educational Options (FES-EO) or the Reading Scholarship to pay for private school tuition, there are additional steps involved through Step Up For Students or AAA Scholarships.
You will need to verify that your chosen private school is an approved ESA vendor before scholarship funds can be applied. iTutorExpress is an approved ESA vendor in Florida and 10 additional states — our team can walk you through exactly how to apply your scholarship funds toward enrollment.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Not formally withdrawing from the homeschool program before enrolling elsewhere — this can create duplicate enrollment records and legal complications.
Enrolling in a school that is not registered with FLDOE — this may not satisfy Florida's compulsory attendance law, putting you at legal risk.
Assuming the private school will handle the public school withdrawal — it won't. That's the parent's responsibility.
Waiting until the new school year starts — transfers can happen at any time during the year in Florida. Don't wait if your child needs support now.
